Editor’s Review – Huawei P10 Lite

Long Lasting Battery . Great Selfie . Sleek Design

The Huawei P10 Lite is one intriguing mid-range contender. Reasonably priced at about RM 1,299 , you get a slim phone with a great design, adequate performance, good battery, decent cameras, and the latest software.

The dual glass design does add some bonus points to its looks and surprisingly, despite the amount of glass being used, the handling of the P10 Lite is not slippery and in fact it feels comfortable on the palm.

The P10 Lite comes with a reasonable amount of storage  (32 GB internal, upto 256 GB external) and boasts fast charging, which our home test clocked in about 40% of battery life after 30 minutes of charging from flat and about 100 minutes to fully charge state.

The chipset is quite capable and the latest Android version is certain to boost performance too. The latest Huawei Camera app should put that 12MP imager to good use and a 5.2″ full-HD screen completes the overall solid package.

Featured Highlights

Camera & Video

  • Primary: 12 MP, f/2.2, autofocus, dual-LED (dual tone) flash
  • Secondary: 8 MP, autofocus, f/2.0, 1080p
  • Video: 1080p@30fps
  • Feature: Geo-tagging, touch focus, face/smile detection, panorama, HDR

The P10 Lite 12 MP camera has a 1.25 µm pixel sensor on the inside. This will allow 20% more light comparing to a 1.12 µm 13MP camera which comes with most mid-range phones.

Huawei also provided an intelligent stabilization system and a 1-out-of-4 frames algorithm for image optimization. In simple terms, this means that the system will automatically select and store the clearest out of the 4 frames.

In addition, the P10 Lite is also pre-installed with several premium photography features such as Light Painting features, Good Food and Panorama.

With such additional features, it makes photography with a P10 Lite even more interesting. Of course, for any ordinary user who leaves it purely on automatic (Photo) mode, it does shoot pretty well too.

That’s some great shots taken using the primary camera of the Huawei P10 Lite. How about the secondary camera at only 8 MP?

Surprisingly, it take beautifully enhanced selfies with bokeh effect. The Portrait mode which is also made possible with the primary camera also comes with a 10 level Beauty enhancement feature.

If still not satisfied, do try out the photo editing software that comes with the P10 Lite. The Beauty editing feature allows you to adjust your complexion whitening, face thinning to give yourself a sharper chin or even sculpt editing.

With a Full HD 1080p video capability, it makes video recording a decent experience over your smartphone. Or course, without an additional physical video stabiliser installed, holding the P10 Lite and basically any other devices of such on our hands to do a photo shoot can be pretty challenging.

Under reasonable conditions, the P10 Lite does also capture a pretty good sound quality on Stereo.

Fast Charging & Long Lasting Battery

The P10 lite uses an 18W fast charge technology of 9V 2A and based on tests of regular users conducted by Huawei, the battery can reach 43% in 30 minutes.

Wonder how long of a video playback can you watch with only a 10 minutes charge? 2-hours!!!

With the fast charging technology, it is definitely a great option to have if the device is unable to support a larger mAh battery.

All in all, with a 3000 mAh battery, it remarkably improves standby time and handles background apps efficiently and effectively. This gives the P10 Lite users a pleasant user experience.

Multi-tasking with AI Support

The Huawei P10 Lite comes with a sate-of-the-art Kirin 658 processor which is power efficient at the same time boosts performance, making multi-tasking possible.

The octa-core 64-bit Kirin 658 processor has a clock speed of up to 2.36GHz. This i5 coprocessor is able to provide the power you need for your daily tasks including gaming to a certain extend while extending its battery life for a full day’s use.

The intelligent EMUI user interface that is exclusive to Huawei’s flagship products does not just make navigation faster but indeed making things simple and yet beautiful. This is where the split screen mode is made possible!

This is proven with the fingerprint sensor where it is able to verify and authenticate the user and unlocks the Huawei P10 Lite in just 0.3 seconds. How much quicker can we ask for?

VoLTE of Voice over LTE offers voice calls over a 4G LTE network which supports up to three times as much data as 3G and up to six times as much as 2G. This means the voice call is in a HD quality, giving users a clearer and more stable communication.

With VoLTE, browsing the internet while on call is also made possible and this is all offered in the P10 Lite. In fact, it is the only mid-range smartphone that comes with VoLTE at the moment.

Knuckle Sense Technology

The knuckle sense technology where it recognises knuckle gestures is being introduced by Huawei. The Mate 8 made a great entry with such a feature. Now, even a mid-range P10 Lite has it and in fact, this is the first mid-range to have the knuckle sense feature.

Among some of the gestures found are the Smart Screenshot, Draw and Dual Windows.

Knuckle Gestures through the Knuckle Sense Technology is definitely an eye opener and there’s no others having this technology ready in their current models. With the ability to differentiate between fingers and knuckles, it has opened up many more usage of this feature and will soon be explored by many others soon.

Huawei definitely takes portability and usability into great consideration when designing each of their models. The P10 Lite was not spared either with the USB On the Go feature ready built.

This eliminates the use of cable or even the slow speed Wi-Fi Direct or Bluetooth file sharing features. With the USB OTG support, we can all backup data from the P10 Lite directly to a pendrive.

App Twin Feature

The App Twin feature is pretty useful for those who have multiple Facebook and WhatsApp accounts. This allows the user to stay connected to both the accounts at the same time. This comes in additionally handy when navigating between both personal and work accounts.

Editor’s Findings

  • Overall premium look and feel with the glassy design. But could be prone to fingerprints and scratches. Perhaps having a Gorilla glass would be nice.
  • The LCD screen is considered average when using the P10 Lite under the sun. Despite that, the LCD screen does have sufficient sharpness, contrast and brightness.
  • Power consumption is good but do take note of the background apps running as that can drain up the power quite easily.
  • Still images have a high level of detail with accurate colors, and great dynamic range. The panoramic photos was surprisingly clear too. Great low-light quality and creative shooting modes for the class.
  • Interesting features to support and enhance Selfie taking. With the bokeh and beauty effect, it seems to be professionally taken.
  • The 1080p video came out with decent detail, but good colors, contrast, and decent dynamic range.
  • The Huawei’s EMUI AI based interface working as an overlay on an android platform does provide easy to use navigation and gestures, including the Knuckle gestures and single handling.
  • The Kirin 658 chipset has sufficient CPU and GPU capabilities to take on daily tasks. Average gaming satisfaction but as a whole, the P10 Lite has the muscles needed to take on required jobs.
  • Video playback and the stereo sound quality on the P10 Lite is above average and for a device this size, the sound produced is loud and clear. Videos are also non-jerky.

  • Surprisingly agile performance and browsing

Editor’s -ve

  • No USB TypeC port
  • No Gorilla Glass

Final Verdict

Unboxing the Huawei P10 Lite already gives you a smile with a high quality transparent back case and fiber screen protector in the box.

For a reasonably priced mid-range device, it is considered value for money with the many features built in. Of course, there are several features short of the flagship P10 but that is expected from the “entry level” P10 Lite.

Indeed, the stylish glassy P10 Lite is a plus point with a capable camera and expendable storage. The P10 Lite will definitely attract users of its class and it is for sure worth exploring what the local Telco’s has to offer too. You might just walk away with a complimentary P10 Lite when you sign a 24 months contract.

The Huawei P10 Lite is going to attract eyeballs and a device worth considering!

    1. Hi Aren,

The Huawei P10 Lite do support 1080p recording but unfortunately at only 30fps.
Perhaps considering the higher end P10s would be a good consideration for 1080p @ 60fps support.
